Set in 80 hectares of park-like grounds, Orana Wildlife Park is New Zealand 's only open range zoo. The Park is located within ten minutes drive (north-west) of Christchurch International Airport.
Orana Wildlife Park has been developed as an open range sanctuary for endangered animals, providing them with enclosures as close to their natural habitat as possible.
Streams, moats and banks are used as barriers to allow visitors the opportunity to see the animals in a natural manner. Over 400 animals from 70 different species are displayed.
Conservation is one of the Park's core missions and the name Orana is the Maori word for welcome or place of refuge. Orana Wildlife Park is internationally recognised for its involvement in captive breeding programmes for endangered exotic animals, as well as New Zealand's own rare fauna.
Visitor Experiences - What you can enjoy:
There is plenty for visitors to enjoy at the Park with fifteen daily animal feeds, one feed approximately every 40 minutes whilst the Park is open! Orana Wildlife Park specialises in getting visitors "up close and personal with the animals".
Highlights include:
- Hand feeding a Giraffe,
- Seeing a Tiger search for their food,
- Meeting White Rhinoceros in a face-to-face encounter,
- Interacting with friendly Farmyard animals.
Orana Wildlife Park also offers a range of behind the scenes type experiences:
- Visitors can through the African Lion Habitat for extremely close up views of the "King of Beasts,"
- Interact with a hand-raised Cheetah,
- Hand feed Ruffed Lemurs and venture into the Tiger Dens.
(The Lion, Cheetah, Lemur and Tiger encounters are each an additional cost to Park entrance. Contact the Park for conditions and availability).
An extensive collection of New Zealand native species is of particular appeal for visitors. Observe New Zealand Kiwi, Tuatara and a range of endangered, endemic birds such as Kea, the only alpine parrot in the world. Stroll through the walk-through aviary whilst native birds fly past and listen to their calls.
Orana Wildlife Park has one of the most comprehensive public displays of native reptiles. A farmyard area enables visitors to pet a range of domestic animals.
Visitors can walk through the Park and/or ride on the complimentary Safari Shuttle, driven by a wildlife expert who provides a commentary. Alternatively, visitors may wish to participate in daily, guided, walkabout tours.
