Nowhere else can you see such a variety of buildings in the styles of the 1930s - Stripped Classical, Spanish Mission, and above all Art Deco, the style of the 20th Century - in such a concentrated area.
What is Art Deco?
The style we now call Art Deco originated in Europe in the early years of the 20th Century, and its heyday was from 1920 to 1940. It became widely known following the great Exposition des Arts Modernes Decoratifs et Industriels, held in Paris in 1925 and from which its name was ultimately derived.
Why Art Deco?
The Art Deco style was at the height of its popularity for buildings in 1931. Its clean simple lines and base relief decoration suited the needs of the new city.

DECO BUS TOUR:
Get out of town and take a dekko at Napier’s outer Art Deco attractions. Our tour takes you along the Marine Parade and around the Napier Hill to historic Ahuriri, the oldest part of Napier and its original port, to the world famous National Tobacco Company building.
Then on to the Deco houses and gardens of Marewa, Napier’s 1930s Art Deco suburb. You’ll return to the Art Deco Shop via Georges Drive, through suburbs reclaimed from swamps by engineers on the one hand and by earthquake on the other, and then along the Marine Parade.
Tour duration is 75 minutes.
VINTAGE DECO CAR TOUR
Here's your opportunity to see Deco outside Napier's City Centre on this informative one-hour tour.
Travel in a beautifully restored 1930's vintage car and visit the remarkable National Tobacco Company Building, the Deco houses and gardens in the suburb of Marewa, and the grand Edwardian Hawke's Bay Club.
Cost $140 for up to 3 or 4 passengers. The tour leaves at a time to suit you, subject to availability.
