Road Cycling World Champion Cadel Evans has created one of those wonderful crossroads moments when Australian pride changes direction. The Yell for Cadel cry from fans produces a new goal for Australia, the Cadel Moment. Backed by his BMC team Cadel made it happen in a gut-busting, marathon, supreme athletic statement.

The legions of fans who rallied to greet Cadel in Melbourne's CBD illustrate the huge boost for national pride and cycling Cadels Moment is.

In his online diary www.cadelevans.com.au Cadel understates his professional cycling Everest success beautifully - "It's fun when you've had a good July", he says.

As readers will know by now your correspondent is a fan of Cadel Evans and the benefits of bicycles. A daily dose of pedal push is literally just what the doctor (Evans) ordered. It is also a ticket to interesting places cars cannot reach, sanity, scenery and a much more direct association with the world and people who have a healthy interest in exercise and the outdoors.

A bike cannot cure Type 2 diabetes, but it will help take tummy flab centimetres off to the point where with careful diet the symptoms disappear. GoSee likes a bike on the back.

So we have experience with a variety of bike racks which clip, bolt and slide on.

Rola has come through with something different. It's the Rola NV2 Bike Rack. It slides into the receiver of the Heavy Duty Hayman Reese towbar of the GoSee Retro HJ60 Toyota Sahara 4WD. It opens to the required size like Edward Scissor Hands and makes a snack of the job as GoSee carts two bikes about.

Combine it with a 4.6m Advanced Security ToyLok and a Hayman Reese Hitch Pin Lock and the result is a tough nut to crack for the Light-fingered Gentry.

The Rola NV2 Bike Rack is in design-terms a Cadel Moment. This extends to the inclusion of Cable Lock Loops which secure the bikes on the bike rack as the rectractable Toylok Security Cable feeds through them. The Toylok padlocked point can be the ToyLoK receiver itself or an anchor point or choice via bolts and instructions which come with the ToyloK.

The Hayman Reese Hitch Pin Lock is an optional addition which GoSee usually uses to secure our custom Drop-shank towing gear. The Rola NV2 Bike Rack comes with lock-pins supplied to cope with popular local shank sizes.

To meet Australian standards a clever flip shank is supplied with the NV2 which meets either a Hayman Reese light (RL) or heavy duty (larger end) towbar. The result is not a tight fit in the Hayman Reese heavy Duty towbar receiver on the 1985 HJ60 towbar. This raised concerns of a rattle and bang result.

But in practice this is not an audible problem although the rack and bikes move slightly on the tongue axis in rough going. GoSee found the Rola NV2 Bike Rack capable of taking punishment from the truck-like ARB suspension of the 4WD HJ60.

This included crossing a series of six 20kmh (max) speed humps at 30kmh. This is not recommended for safe normal use. The Rola assembly instructions say truck-like suspensions and extreme (4WD) roads and driving should be avoid with the NV2.

The NV2 Rola assembly instructions can be confusing.

The NV2 comes in a pretty box which shows only one cable loop. It does not show the anti-sway fingers in the hero images. The first diagram of the assembly instructions shows both cable loops orientated to the right. The second shows them orientated to the left. It does not say front and back view. This is not explained until diagram 7.

Which once again underlines the need to read all the instructions before any assembly is started. The two Sway Fingers fit left and right on the support tubes. Toward the vehicle on the left tube, away on the right. Four security Torx -Screw lock the tubes.

Two go through the cable lock loops. An Allen-Key is supplied to send them home, but take care to seat the threads before tightening them down.

This part of the job is a fiddle and cross-threading is on the cards. Pay attention to assembly diagram 3. Each of the four bike carrying cradles has an orientation.

They go through the bike wheel spokes and under the bike rims. Rim straps lock the wheel down.

The clever multi-locks on the scissor-like support tubes allow the NV2 to adjust to the required bike -size. Levers at the front and back of the support hubs release locks to allow adjustment. With two bikes the inner bike goes on first.

The bike handlebars are at the right and left of the bike rack on the cradle faces. If the bikes have parcel carriers on the rear wheels the NV2 will have to be juggled to allow the rear cradle face to fit under the bike wheel rim clear of the carrier mountings.

The flip-shank which slides into the towbar receiver on the vehicle required a hammer and a set of Allen-keys to fit. The flip shank variation works via a lock-nut and bolt which feeds through the NV2 mounting brackets and the middle of the Flip Shank.

GoSee needed to gently tap the bolt to get it in place and then use a bigger Allen-key on the bolt-head than supplied and a spanner to tighten the nut down. GoSee's impression is that the drilling job is slightly off centre. A pull pin with a clip locks the shank in either Heavy or Light Duty receiver hitch position and the NV2 is ready to rack-up the bikes.

The NV2 can be placed in three positions allowing easy access to the rear of the vehicle and can be stowed upright for travel. The hitch mounted NV2 fits most vehicles with a square receiver type towbar, including most 4WD’s with a rear mounted spare wheel carrier. This plus its ability to adjust for all bike shapes and sizes, makes the NV2 one of the most versatile bike racks on the market.

Part 59508. Fits both heavy duty and standard towbars.

RRP $299.
