Rapid Finance suggests five 'Best Vehicles' for towing your caravan

When it comes to choosing a new vehicle for towing a caravan, some potential choices are better than others.

With that in mind, Rapid Finance suggests five vehicles for towing your caravan.

Here are their picks.

1. Toyota LandCruiser

Long popular with caravan enthusiasts, the Toyota LandCruiser is heavy, powerful and well supported by its dealers throughout Australia. Toyota says the new 70 series with 4.5L V8 Twin Turbo-diesel and six-speed automatic transmission can tow 3500kg with up to 350kg on the towball.

But reliable towing power doesn't come cheap.

Prices start at about $70k and go up from there. LandCruisers, however, do hold their value well and over a range of models are noted for reliability.

If initial cost is not the first consideration Toyota's LandCruiser diesel is a caravan towing powerhouse with a proven track record when the towing gets tough.

2. Ford Falcon

Depending on the model Ford says the 2016 FG X Falcon has enough torque power to comfortably tow most things up to 2300kg. That is not bad for a vehicle of its size, but the Falcon's forte is obviously light to middle order caravans.

For warranty cover, Ford's towing set-up requirements must be observed.

But while it may not have the towing capacity of other tow vehicle options on this list the Falcon does have one distinct advantage. It is a car, not an SUV or 4WD, so you get all the benefits of a passenger vehicle without the initial price-tag of its larger counterparts.

Which makes the Ford Falcon FG X a potential alternative to the usual SUV and 4WD when towing light to medium trailers up to 2300kg fully loaded.

3. Isuzu D-Max

There is no shortage of dual cab utes capable of towing 3500kg with up to 350kg on the tow ball in top diesel models. The Holden Colorado, Ford Ranger and its kissing cousin the Mazda BT50 are three other solid examples.

The Isuzu D-Max comes from a stable noted for tough trucks. Good build quality and honest performance are the benefits that experience brings.

Performance is comfortably steady when towing.

The D-Max is powered by Isuzu's 3L, 4-cylinder turbo-diesel engine.

As with all vehicle makers it is essential buyers inform themselves about warranted towing specification across model variations.

Overall, the top of the range Isuzu D-Max 4x4, rated to tow 3500kg with up to 350kg on the tow ball is an affordable choice, which adds to the practicality of a dual cab ute.

4. Land Rover Discovery 4

Another favourite of caravaners, the Land Rover is a rugged and reliable towing machine.

The Discovery 4 is no exception.

It is tough, great off-road and muscular enough to have a rated 3500kg maximum towing capacity.

Land Rover will not allow use of a Weight Distribution Hitch (WDH) towing safety aid under warranty.

The 2015 Discovery 4 SDV6 SE features a 183kW/600Nm 3L turbo-diesel V6, with eight-speed automatic transmission, and is a worthy upgrade from the entry level TDV6.

The Land Rover Discovery 4 may be getting a little long in the tooth, but its heritage makes it properly together towing, on road and particularly off-road.

5. Jeep Grand Cherokee

Rounding out this list is the 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee.

At about $50k for the base Laredo diesel model, it is the best value vehicle on this list, because despite its lower price, Jeep does not skimp on features.

Careful selection of attractive options to spec the diesel Laredo up yields exceptional value.

Jeep warranties the Grand Cherokee V6 diesel to tow 3500kg with 350kg maximum on the tow ball. Jeep requires a Weight Distribution Hitch (WDH) be used when towing trailer of 2268kg and above.

For the price, buyers get a smooth, economical 3L diesel V6 engine and eight-speed automatic transmission, plus all the trimmings you would expect from a modern SUV.

It really is impressive when you consider that the Discovery 4 and LandCruiser charge up to 20K more for similar luxuries.

If you fancy any of the vehicles on this list and are ready to upgrade your caravan hauler, the team at Rapid Finance can help you to arrange car finance.
